Intermittency and universality in fully developed inviscid and weakly compressible turbulent flows.
We perform high-resolution numerical simulations of homogenous and isotropic compressible turbulence, with an average 3D Mach number close to 0.3. We study the statistical properties of intermittency for velocity, density, and entropy. For the velocity field, which is the only quantity that can be compared to the isotropic incompressible case, we find no statistical differences in its behavior ...
متن کاملPossible Effects of Small-Scale Intermittency in Turbulent Reacting Flows
It is now well established that quantities such as energy dissipation, scalar dissipation and enstrophy possess huge fluctuations in turbulent flows, and that the fluctuations become increasingly stronger with increasing Reynolds number of the flow. The effects of this small-scale “intermittency” on various aspects of reacting flows have not been addressed fully. This paper draws brief attentio...
متن کاملHot self-similar relativistic MHD flows
We consider axisymmetric relativistic jets with a toroidal magnetic field and an ultrarelativistic equation of state, with the goal of studying the lateral structure of jets whose pressure is matched to the pressure of the medium through which they propagate. We find all self-similar steady-state solutions of the relativistic MHD equations for this setup. One of the solutions is the case of a p...
متن کاملUniversality of probability distributions among two-dimensional turbulent flows
We study statistical properties of two-dimensional turbulent flows. Three systems are considered: the Navier-Stokes equation, surface quasigeostrophic flow, and a model equation for thermal convection in the Earth's mantle. Direct numerical simulations are used to determine one-point fluctuation properties. Comparative study shows universality of probability density functions (PDFs) across diff...
متن کاملA Mthod for Generating the Turbulent Intermittency Function
A detection method based on sensitization of a squared double differentiated signal is developed which discriminates the turbulent zones from laminar zones quite accurately. The procedure adopts a variable threshold and a variable hold time of the order of the Kolmogorov time scale. The output file so generated, includes all the information for further analysis of the turbulent signal.
